How DuraFlex Products Fail - and How We Fix Them
- DuraFlex 316L liner pitting near the smoke shelf. We see this regularly on wood-burning fireplaces in Annapolis homes within a half-mile of the water. Salt air plus moisture trapped behind an old clay tile accelerates corrosion on the stainless steel. The liner looks fine from the top, but the camera shows pitting at the lower third. We replace the affected section with OEM-equivalent 316L or upgrade to a thicker gauge, depending on how far the corrosion has spread.
- DuraFlex Pro stainless tees shifting out of alignment on fireplace inserts. The tee connection behind an insert loosens over repeated heating cycles, especially when the original install didn’t include proper support strapping. - Fireboxes with spalling brick around the damper frame. This isn’t strictly a DuraFlex problem, but it shows up where a liner was installed without addressing the original firebox condition. Spalling bricks shed face material, which falls into the damper seat and prevents a tight close. We repair the firebox with heat-rated mortar and set the damper alignment, then verify the draft with the camera.
- Corroded rain caps and top plates on otherwise healthy liners. Most Annapolis chimney caps are steel, not stainless, and they rust at the clamp points.
