Famco Fireplace Services Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

How Famco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

Famco built a lot of fireplaces in the 1990s and early 2000s, and we see specific patterns in Annapolis homes. Here are the failures we run into most.

  • Famco Premier Series gas valve failure. The Premier line used a standing-pilot gas valve that tends to wear out after 12 to 18 years. The symptom is usually a pilot that lights but won’t stay lit, or a burner that clicks but won’t ignite. We test the thermopile and gas pressure first, then replace the valve with a quality aftermarket unit when the OEM part is discontinued. This is the single most common Famco repair we do in Annapolis.
  • Famco Ember Series thermocouple and thermopile wear. The Ember Series (including the Ember Direct Vent models) uses a millivolt system that depends on a thermopile to hold the gas valve open. When the thermopile weakens, the fireplace shuts off mid-burn. We replace the thermopile and clean the pilot assembly, which usually restores dependable ignition. It’s a $180 to $320 repair, and it’s often mistaken for a bad gas valve.
  • Famco wood-burning units with cracked firebrick and deteriorated mortar. Older Famco wood fireplaces in homes near the Severn River and along Spa Creek take on moisture from the salt air. Repeated heating and cooling causes the firebrick to crack and the mortar joints to crumble. We re-point the mortar, replace broken firebrick, and inspect the firebox for hidden gaps behind the brick. In Eastport and Murray Hill, where many homes sit close to the water, this moisture-driven wear shows up earlier than it would inland.
  • Famco insert door gasket failure on wood and pellet units. The braided fiberglass gasket around the door of a Famco insert compresses over time. When it fails, air leaks into the firebox, the burn runs hot, and the glass gets a buildup of creosote fast. We replace the gasket with the correct diameter rope and apply a proper gasket adhesive, then test the seal. Most people don’t know the gasket is the problem until they see the glass getting dirty within two or three fires.
  • Famco direct vent termination cap blockage and rust-through. The termination cap on a Famco direct vent unit sits outside, exposed to Annapolis humidity and salt spray. We see rust-through on the cap and blockage from leaves, wasp nests, and the occasional squirrel. We replace rusted caps with stainless steel aftermarket caps that outlast the original painted metal. On waterfront properties in Eastport, we recommend the cap be checked every year, not every two or three.

One detail worth knowing: Famco’s parts supply is spotty. Some components are still available, but many have been discontinued. When OEM parts are no longer made, we source through our supply network, including DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco components where they match the unit. We’ll tell you in writing whether we’re installing an OEM part or a quality aftermarket equivalent, and what the difference means for warranty and longevity.

Our Famco Fireplace Services Process

  1. 1
You call (443) 274-4231. A live person answers, not a voicemail. We ask what the unit is doing - or not doing - and schedule a window that works for you. You’ll get a text when the tech is on the way.
  2. 2
We arrive and do a camera inspection. Before pricing anything, we run a camera down the flue and inspect the firebox, gas line or wood firebox, burner, pilot assembly, and termination cap. NFPA 211 Level 2. You’ll see the photos.
  3. 3
We write the price before we start. The scope, the price, and the warranty are in writing before a single tool comes off the truck. That’s Haven Standard Clause 1: nothing starts until it’s in writing.
  4. 4
We explain the parts decision. If your Famco part is discontinued, we walk you through what’s available: OEM, quality aftermarket, or a repair that buys you time. We don’t push replacements you don’t need.
  5. 5
We complete the repair and test it. For gas units, that means checking gas pressure, testing the thermopile and thermocouple readings, and running the unit through multiple cycles. For wood units, we run a burn test when conditions allow.
  6. 6
You get a documented photo record. Before, during, and after photos plus the written warranty, delivered after the job. Haven Standard Clause 4 has required this on every job since 2009.
