Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation: The Annapolis Owner’s Guide

Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To

The compatibility gotcha is the flue tile measurement. An Olympia cap sized for a 13″ x 13″ flue will not seat properly on a 13″ x 9″ flue, and the difference is enough that the cap rocks in the slip section and loosens within a season. When we arrive, we measure the outside dimension of the flue tile with a tape, not the inside. That outside dimension, plus the number of flues and whether the crown is poured concrete or precast, determines the exact Olympia model that fits. • Water in the firebox after rain. If you see a puddle or damp ash after a hard Annapolis rain, the cap’s hood is missing or rusted through and the flue is taking water directly. That water migrates down into the smoke chamber and can soak the firebrick in one good storm.
• Rust staining down the chimney crown. When the galvanized mesh or the stainless hood starts breaking down, iron oxide runs down the brick. In Annapolis’s salt air, that breakdown happens faster near the water in Eastport and along the Severn than it does inland.
• Animal noise in the chimney. Birds, squirrels, and raccoons don’t need much. A cap with a torn mesh panel or a missing corner brace is an invitation. We have pulled live animals out of chimneys in Annapolis that had caps, but the mesh had failed where it was riveted to the frame.
• Water leaking through the ceiling near the fireplace. This is the late-stage symptom, and by the time you see it, the water has already been running down the inside of the flue for months. The cap failing is often the first link in that chain.
• Visible rust-through or missing sections. You should be able to see this from a ladder. If the mesh is gone in patches or the hood has pinholes, it is past the point of repair and needs replacing.

What drives the higher end of the range is roof pitch and access. A cap on a one-story rancher in Annapolis Roads costs less to swap than a cap on a three-story colonial on a steep lot where we need a roof ladder and a spotter. DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check your cap from the ground with binoculars: rust color, tears in the mesh, missing sections, or a cap leaning off-center. If you have a safe way to get eyes on the crown from a ladder that never goes past your gut, you can look at the mounting legs and the seal around the slip section. What we do not recommend is doing the replacement yourself if it means walking a roof, especially a damp Annapolis morning roof with a pitch steep enough that the ladder has to be tied off.

The failure we see most from DIY cap work is the cap not being sized right or the legs not being sealed, which means the new cap is loose by the first big storm.
